Our family is constantly on the look-out for quality material that encourages a deeper understanding of God’s word and prepares our children to be defenders of their faith. We have found the books by J.Warner Wallace (Cold Case Christianity, Forensic Faith and God’s Crime Scene) to be a valuable resource written from his unique perspective as a cold-case detective. Imagine our excitement when we were recently blessed with the opportunity to read and review the most recent book in his kid’s series called God’s Crime Scene for Kids. It is the companion to he and his wife’s first apologetics book for kids, Cold Case Christianity for Kids.

About the Book

The reader follows the journey of Jason and his friends as they uncover the mystery surrounding a box found in his grandmother’s attic. The inquisitive kids learn to uncover evidence with the help of their law enforcement cadet academy mentor, Detective Jeffries. Through their investigation they not only uncover valuable clues to unlock the mysteries of the box, but also how to follow the evidence that leads to the existence of God. By reading God’s Crime Scene for Kids, your child will learn real life detective skills, logical thinking and deductive reasoning with the help of a real-life detective, J. Warner Wallace. By the end they will have the skills needed to build a case for God’s existence.

My Personal Review

There simply aren’t enough wonderful things I can say about God’s Crime Scene for Kids. The book is geared toward children 8-12 years old. Of course, that doesn’t mean children outside of that targeted age group can’t enjoy what this book has to offer. Our children are 11 and 13 and really enjoyed reading along with Jason and his adventure to uncovering the truth behind the mysterious box.

Throughout the book Detective Jeffries guides the kids through the process of locating evidence, deciphering that evidence and utilizing the 5 W and 1 H questions. All the while leading the kids to the  evidence of God and his amazing Creation. J. Warner Wallace makes understanding the process of detective work easy to follow and shows how these critical thinking skills easily apply to discovering and making a case for God.

I enjoyed the many side-notes throughout the book. These are broken down by “CSI Assignment”, “Detective Definitions” and “A Tool for your Detective Bag”. Each note offers another level of information to help them on their investigative journey. Our children really enjoyed digging into scripture via the CSI Assignments and found learning detective definitions extremely interesting.

J.Warner Wallace and his wife have created activity sheets on their website so you and your child can complete activities as you read through the book. There are also video clips and even a printable certificate at the end. These are a valuable resource for driving home the skills learned throughout the book.

Conclusion

If you and your children are looking to learn more about the evidence for God’s existence then God’s Crime Scene for Kids is a wonderful place to start. Reading through J. Warner Wallace’s latest book has been an immense blessing to our family. It has sparked an interest in our children to learn more about how to be strong defenders of their faith through skillful investigation, acquiring evidence and case building. It has been a joy to read about Jason’s mystery and how this one strange box led him to uncovering the love of family and the truth about our incredible God.
